Avatars of Krishna in details

Updated: Apr 8

Hare Krishna! Today, we are discussing a topic that is often misunderstood yet very intriguing. During one session, a question arose about who the avatars of Vishnu are ? whether Vishnu is the source of all avatars? .

Most responses mentioned 10 avatars, while some suggested there are 29. Although these answers are based on common beliefs or childhood tales, the truth is little different . In this article we are trying to According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, an authoritative text on Lord Krishna's Leela, avatars are categorized as follows, with Sri Krishna being the source of all avatars. Krishna appears in His original form once in a day of Brahma and is known as Avatari, not an avatar.

When Lord Krishna and other avatars manifest, they do so with spiritual bodies, not material ones. Thus, we refer to them as incarnations. Just like the sun rises and sets without being said to be born, it is similarly stated about Him: Nitya Nityanam. They are eternal.

Krishna in His original form manifests as Balaram, Sankarshan, Pradyumna, etc., and Vishnu is an avatar of Krishna. Let's delve into the details.

The types of Avatars are:

  1. Purusha Avatar:

    1. Krishna first incarnates as the three Purusha avatars: Karanodakashayi Vishnu - "The Lord who lies on the causal ocean."

    2. Garbhodakashayi Vishnu - "The Lord who lies on the universal ocean."

    3. Kshirodakashayi Vishnu - "The Lord who lies on the ocean of milk."

2. Lila Avatars: They come to perform a particular Leela or pastime incarnation.

  1. Varaha

  2. Matsya

  3. Nrsimha

  4. Kurma

  5. Vamana

  6. Bhargava Parasurama

  7. Ramachandra

  8. Prlambhari Balarama

  9. Krishna

  10. Kalki (will appear at the end of Kali Yuga)

Guna Avatars:

  1. Vishnu appears as Satva Guna in the mode of goodness and takes responsibility for maintenance.

  2. Brahma appears as Raja Guna in the mode of passion and takes responsibility for creation.

  3. Shiva appears as Tamo Guna in the mode of ignorance and takes responsibility for destruction.

4) Manvantara Avatars:

Brahma's day, consisting of 1,000 catur yugas, is divided into fourteen periods ruled by Manus (fathers of mankind), known as manvantaras. The incarnations during these manvantaras are as follows:

Yajna, Vibhu, Satyasena, Hari, Vaikuntha, Ajita, Sarvabhauma, Rsabha, Visvaksena,

Dharma, Sudhama, Yogesvara, Brhadbhanu

5) Yuga Avatars:

The four yugas (ages) occur in cycles:

Satya Yuga, lasting 1,728,000 years

Treta Yuga, lasting 1,296,000 years

Dwapara Yuga, lasting 864,000 years

Kali Yuga, lasting 432,000 years

In each yuga, the Lord incarnates with a different body color according to the yuga.

In the Satya Yuga, a white avatar appeared to Hansa to establish meditation as the process for self-realization.

In the Treta Yuga, a red avatar appeared as Agni to establish fire sacrifice as the process for self-realization.

In the Dvapara Yuga, a dark avatar (Krishna) appeared as the son of Devaki to establish temple worship as the process for self-realization.

In the Kali Yuga, a yellow avatar appeared (Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) as the son of Sachi Mata to establish the chanting of the holy names (nama-sankirtana) as the process for self-realization.

6. Shaktyavesha Avatars: - Empowered Incarnations

There is no limit to the number of shaktyavesha incarnations. They are of two kinds, direct and indirect.

When the Lord Himself expands, displaying a particular power of His opulences, He is known as Sakshat.

When He empowers a living entity with some particular shakti - power, for a specific activity, to represent Him, that living entity is called an indirect or avesha incarnation.

Avesha incarnations:

  • Four Kumaras empowered with knowledge.

  • Narada empowered with devotional service.

  • Brahma empowered with creative power.

  • King Pritu empowered with the power to maintain living beings.

  • Parasurama empowered with the power to eliminate evil elements.

  • VedaVyasa empowered to compile the Vedas.

  • Buddha empowered to end Violence and institute an 'Apatkalin "Dharma

  • SrimadBhagavatam : empowered to narrate Leelas of Krishna

As mentioned in Sri Ishopanishad:

Om Purnamadah Purnamidam, Purnat Purnamudachyate

Purnasya Purnamadaya, Purnameva Vashishyate

The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced from the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.

ALL AVATARS ARE COMPLETE AND WHOLE AND ALWAYS EQUAL
